Custom Display Cabinets for Meteorites

A university meteorite studies center, housing more than 10,000 individual specimens, had moved to a new building and were afforded the opportunity to expand and upgrade their collection. Custom cabinets for humidity and temperature-controlled meteorite storage and display were designed specifically for this application to ensure proper preservation and space savings in this one-of-a-kind project. Meeting Stringent Storage Requirements

The first priority was the preservation and conservation of the collection itself. With the remodel, the project committee decided to create a humidity and temperature-controlled space, specifying sealed metal cabinets with wooden drawers. The drawers would need to be interchangeable between cabinets with heights varying from 49.5″ to 84″.

To create a space that would both store and display the meteorite collection, 12-sided counter-height cabinets were also installed. These cabinets have alternating sections and are configured with either storage drawers or glass shelving with built-in LED lighting to showcase the contents. With their largest specimen weighing 700 lbs, the full-extension shelving also needed to be able to sustain hundreds of pounds of weight while remaining adjustable and easy to access.

All materials within the cabinets were also required to be completely devoid of off-gassing, laminates, glues, or silicones to protect and preserve the specimens properly.

Counter-height tapered cabinets were designed to create twelve-sided islands that would complement and maximize the available floor space. The lighting systems within the shelves are controlled with one wall switch, making them easy to use.

All of the cabinets are fully sealed and feature custom no offgassing powder-coat finishes, heavy-duty full extension shelves, 1/2″ thick glass shelves, and full-height glass doors that offer enhanced visibility. The glass shelves are interchangeable with steel shelving to give the cabinets complete flexibility.

659 wooden drawers are included in the cabinets and each have the university logo etched on the face, giving an aesthetically pleasing and high-profile look. The doors are also fully removable with piano hinges and closes in three locations to make a tight seal, and flush-mounted to the walls for a sleek appearance. Even with the stringent requirements with non off-gassing materials and the weight of the specimens, the project was completely customized to meet their every need. (see our museum video brochure)
