How Digital Evidence Lockers Work
With both lockers, the officer takes the confiscated crime scene evidence and accesses a locker compartment using a digital keypad or the officer’s ID badge. Lights will immediately display on all of the unused locker compartments. The office selects and deposits the crime scene evidence into the appropriate locker and closes the door. The locker’s computer software records when evidence is deposited, who deposited it, and which compartment the evidence is in. The software will also notify the evidence technician that evidence has been deposited for pickup.
The evidence technician will then access the compartment using the digital keypad or their ID badge, retrieve the evidence and take it to the property and evidence room for logging and storing.
If the police station uses a pass-thru locker, then the evidence technician will access the locker from the evidence room using the digital keypad or their ID badge.
Pass-Back Keyless Digital Evidence Locker Mode
The evidence technician can also use the locker to pass-back evidence to the police officer. To do this, the evidence technician deposits the evidence into a locker compartment which notifies the officer to pick up the evidence. The pass-back locker mode is used when the officer takes evidence to court or a crime scene technician must check the evidence for evaluation or analysis.
Overnight Evidence Hold
The digital evidence locker can also be used to hold evidence overnight. The overnight feature allows the officer to deposit confiscated evidence in a safe locker compartment instead of the trunk of their police car or a desk drawer. For example, if an officer retrieves evidence to present in court, but the court is running behind and never gets to their case, the officer can deposit the evidence into a locker compartment overnight.
Evidence Locker Drop Slots
Evidence locker drop slots are available on locker doors for depositing smaller evidence. These drop slots are used for misdemeanor drug evidence or audio tape recordings.
