ADA Compliant
The Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) specifies specific requirements that affect lockers. These requirements apply to athletes with special needs and how these athletes store equipment, specifically wheelchair storage.
Only single-tier and double-tier lockers will meet those ADA requirements. To comply, at least 5% of the lockers provided, but no less than one locker needs to meet the ADA requirements.

ADA Tier Requirement Explained
Single-tier lockers:
- The shelf and coat hooks must be lowered to 48″ above the floor.
- An extra shelf needs to be added to bring the bottom of the locker to no lower than 9″ above the floor.
- In addition, only recessed handles with multi-point latching meet the ADA specifications.
Double-tier lockers:
- Add an extra shelf to bring the bottom of the locker to no lower than 9″ above the floor.
- Only the lower opening is ADA compliant.
- In addition, only recessed handles with multi-point latching meet the ADA specifications.
Meeting the Need
A wheelchair basketball team’s lockers weren’t serving the team’s needs adequately. The locker rooms were not handicap accessible for an entire team, and the men’s and women’s teams were left to adapt to the best of their ability. That is until customized wheelchair athletic lockers came into play to create accessible storage for the wheelchair basketball teams. (See more athletic storage solutions)
Case Study
One of the most significant issues for the old locker room is that the lockers weren’t efficiently storing their necessary gear. This inefficiency did not allow the athletes to use the entire locker length as the bottom section of the locker accommodates uniforms, equipment, and wheels (each player has an extra set for basketball and day chairs).
The team coach wanted them to access the entire locker space from their wheelchairs and a specified area for spare wheel storage that wasn’t within the locker.
The solution began with standard personal storage lockers, which measured 46″ tall. This height left enough space to construct a custom rack for the extra wheels that were still accessible from a wheelchair.
The locker body also contained a configurable section with hooks that allowed players to hang towels, clothes, and other items. Locking cubby space is also available for personal items.
With any wheelchair storage solution, the biggest issue is space. The customized athletic lockers were not only able to save space but also an organized, attractive, functional, and accessible solution for the team.
The team moves around quickly, and there’s plenty of space for their items and equipment. The room for the wheels, in particular, has proved to be a unique and invaluable solution.

“Thanks so much (Troy) for coordinating getting the ramp removed so quickly. We truly appreciate the communication and doing whatever it took to meet our last-minute notice deadline. Your customer service throughout the process has been second to none.”
“I have worked with Chuck on several projects since arriving at Kansas University. He is a top reason why I continue to come back to Spacesaver/Southwest Solutions Group for our storage needs. He has experience with several athletic equipment room projects and sweats every detail because he knows it matters to us. Chuck never hesitates to jump in when necessary to make sure the project is finished properly. He is prompt for appointments and puts in the extra time to meet deadlines. Several adjustments had to be made during installation and he kept us well informed we are pleased with the results. I’ve noted several points above that leave me with positive memories. The completed and immaculate new athletic equipment system along with its work counters and modular cabinets will be my most positive memory.”
“Your team absolutely knocked it out of the park! We are very pleased with the high-quality work they did under challenging conditions. I will be contacting you around November/December of this year as we will need additional racks installed.”
